More than likely you’ve heard of the term “virtual reality” before, but its close cousin–a technology known as “augmented reality”–is beginning to make waves in the digital space as well. Unlike virtual reality, where the user is completely immersed in a digital world, augmented reality (AR) cleverly blends digital elements into your real-world experience. One of the simplest examples of this can be seen in any televised NFL game–if you’ve ever noticed the computer-generated lines, scores or stats that appear to be painted onto the football field, you’ve seen augmented reality in action.

Augmented Reality + GPS Games = FUN

New uses for augmented reality are being developed on a regular basis, not the least of which are games that blend the digital world with physical reality. Houdini’s Room Escape, the Cincinnati escape room of choice, has recently delved into the world of augmented reality by partnering with a German app developer to create an AR-enhanced, GPS-enabled outdoor adventure game that’s just as exhilarating and addictive as their escape room challenges.

Similar to uber-popular GPS games such as geo-caching and scavenger hunting, Houdini’s Room Escape’s augmented reality GPS adventure game allows you to go on an outdoor excursion, solving riddles and puzzles at each stop along the way in order to reveal your next destination.

So How Does the Game Work?

Using an iPad furnished by Houdini’s Room Escape (you will leave your ID/credit card in exchange for using the device), you’ll be given a series of riddles to solve in order to progressively reveal a set of GPS locations that will lead you on a thrilling adventure through downtown Montgomery.

If you’ve ever seen the movie “National Treasure,” you have a good idea of what you’re in for when you accept this challenge; just as historian Benjamin Gates (played by Nicolas Cage) had to search far and wide to discover clues and solve riddles in order to discover his next steps, new clues will only be revealed in the game as you continue walking along the route provided.

The game moves at your own pace, so you don’t have to worry about being overwhelmed or rushed; you can take your time and enjoy each step of the journey. Common elements of the local environment (e.g., statues, plaques, landmarks, etc.) will turn into GPS checkpoints that help you stay on track toward finishing the route with success, offering a thrilling and brain-teasing challenge for everyone who participates. There are several versions of the game available for different ages and skill levels, providing a fun and healthy challenge for everyone from puzzle fanatics to children and older groups as well.

Houdini’s Room Escape is offering this augmented reality GPS adventure from June to October, so it’s a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the warm weather while having tons of fun with family and friends. If you’re ready to try a completely different type of game that offers an exciting and mind-bending real-world challenge, stop by Houdini’s Room Escape to participate in this thrilling new adventure!
